Your Knee MRI: Doctor's friend

Knee MRI Should be done next! Did your doctor tell you that?

Well in imaginary world we have already done step 1 and step 2 of knee pain diagnosis.

Still nothing major detected so doctor has advised MRI.

What is that?

It is a diagnostic imaging method that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create pictures of the knee joint and surrounding muscles and ligaments.

Are you worried about radiation exposure from it? Please do not worry as it does not use any radiation.


You have reached imaging center.

  • Wear gown or non metal objects clothes
  • You will be lying or standing on a frame in tube.
  • Dye may or may not be injected wither in your arm or directly in your knees.
  • X-ray technologist operates the machine from different room while you are under test for 30-60 minutes.

They might ask you not to eat 4-6 hours before procedure.

Are you scared of being left alone in a closed environment?(claustrophobia) Tell your doctor about that.

Also discuss following issues with your provider following issues.

Please do not worry! Its not a knee injection is it?

One hour at most will pass so quick that you would not realize.

Still for that time you can watch TV and relax and listen to music by earphone.

Still not convinced because you are claustrophobic? Ask them and they will give you medicine to relax.


As we already know bone spurs are seen on knee x-ray.

So the main purpose of mri is to evaluate soft tissue injuries like ACL injury, meniscal tears, ligamental sprains etc.

It is also indicated for cases of fluid on knee and Baker's cyst.

Although Knee MRI is good for knee pain diagnosis it is not perfect.
